The Biography collection of The Edna G. Culver Family Papers contains diaries, journals and writings from four individuals, each of which has been given his own page.

Charles Sutcliffe

Born in 1820, Charles emigrated to Wisconsin in 1845, settling near present-day Arena in Iowa County, where he spent the rest of his life. In 1873, he undertook a return visit to England to see for the last time on earth his remaining family. Charles passed away in 1895 and is buried in the Mazomanie Cemetery.

The CW Sutcliffe Collection consists of diaries for the years 1869 and 1870 and, most significantly, his 1873 journal of his return to England, chock full of names and other genealogical information.

Elmer Culver

Elmer was born in 1897 in rural Iowa County, Wisconsin. Orphaned at age ten with the death of his father, he spent time amongst relations in South Dakota before returning to Wisconsin, where married Edna Gefke in 1927 and became a successful businessman.

Elmer wrote a number of autobiographies which focus mostly on his early life. He passed away at the age of ninety one.

Edna G. Culver

Born in 1899 near Madison, Wisconsin, Edna Gefke was a granddaughter Charles W. Sutcliffe. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1924 and, in 1927 she married Elmer Culver, and they had four children. She passed away in 1997 at the age of ninety eight.

Edna was a life-long diarist. Unfortunately, most of her diaries have been lost. What has been preserved is presented here, ranging from her college years into the 1980s.

EGC-BIO-037 Ruth G. Batz Diary 1974

Sister to Edna, Ruth Gefke was married three times, finally to Louis Batz. She, too, was a diarist; however, only one of her diaries has been preserved, from 1974.
